San José – A charming village

San José, locally called Sant Josep de Sa Talaia, is known for its tranquil atmosphere as being a fishing village with peaceful surrounding brimming with unique wildlife. The town became an epicentre for religious culture in the 17th century when the Sant Jose parish church was constructed. The charming village is just a short drive from the more popular Ibiza Town, making it an excellent getaway for those looking for a more authentic taste of Ibiza. Yearly in March, the town hosts Fiesta Major with fireworks, traditional dance, and Ibicencan singing and storytelling.

Sights to See

The stone watchtower in town is a historical monument and gives you a birds-eye view of the coastline, where you can even see the nearby Es Vedrà Island. The parish church of Sant Jose has stood the test of time and is a great marvel to take in while exploring the Ibizan culture. Although the church and many buildings took heavy fire during the Spanish Civil War, they still stand firm and have beautiful artwork throughout, many of it restored since the late 18th century. There is also a local market with designer boutiques offering styles you will not find anywhere else in the world.

Dining

For the best tapas head to El Destino, but be sure to make a reservation if you are coming in the summer months. The food is so good at El Destino that you need to plan this trip well in advance, but it is well worth it according to local reviews.

For traditional Ibizan dishes look behind the beautiful church for Can Manyanet, where you can enjoy casserole of lamb, chicken, or potatoes and saffron while you admire the lush gardens and bask in the shade from the great church. The simple elegance.

If you want a more relaxed atmosphere with chill vibes and Jazz music head over to Es Raco Verde. This family-friendly restaurant will make you feel welcomed and give you a taste of grace in a home away from home.

Ancient Architecture

San José seems to be frozen in time and is one of the last places you can see the traditional architecture untouched by advances in tourism. Many of the local shops are located within ancient buildings that have stood the test of time and are still thriving and going strong.

The villas in this town are some of the most peaceful and resemble Roman empiric buildings. They boast high ceilings, Roman archways, and extravagant pathways. You will even find Roman bathhouse styles in these villas, providing a piece of serenity on an otherwise bustling and busy island.
